Age Appropriate Behaviour

I try to encourage age appropriate behaviour wherever possible with my son, who has developmental delay and learning disability due to Down’s Syndrome, as all the professionals advise. When it comes to toys, books and TV programs, he simply isn’t interested in the kind of things most eight year old boys are into. Since play and leisure time is supposed to primarily be about fun, should I try to push age appropriate things onto him, or just relax and let him have the things he enjoys?

My vote is just relax.  You are your child’s first expert, and while therapists and treating providers like to add their two cents continually about what they think you should be doing or how you should be doing it, sometimes just letting them be who they are without forcing them to be anyone else’s idea makes the whole family feel content and happy.
