Today’s question…

~Q: Should my child be wearing their splints/braces while using the Upsee?

In short, yes. If your child uses splints or braces during therapy or any weight-bearing activity, they should wear them with the Upsee too. It’s always a good idea to check with your therapist if you’re unsure. We designed the Upsee to accompany standing and walking therapies as well as weight-bearing activities at home, but as you know, every child’s condition is different so their therapy needs are different too.

For lower limbs, ankle splints (AFOs) may help prevent knees locking back into hyperextension. If your child’s knees are still locked back when wearing ankle splints, try standing facing down a very gentle slope while using the Upsee. This should encourage knee bend (flexion). Using lower limb gaiters can also help keep knees straight.

For upper limbs, arm gaiters can keep elbows straight and enable your child to hold the handle of a trolley or push-along toy. This way both you and the child benefit from having your hands free while in the Upsee.
