So, compulsory education age came around for us this September, just like it did for many children with special needs.
But long ago, before our daughter's issues became apparent to us, we had already decided that we would be taking the home educating path.
I can't pretend our decision hasn't surprised a few people, after all, school is the norm here in the UK. The law says that children must receive a full time education suitable for their age, ability and aptitude, and any special educational needs they may have, at school or otherwise.
We opted for 'otherwise', and we are pretty happy with our choice!
Our days follow their natural rhythm, no set routines or timetables. We spend time outside, caring for Taliah's pony and tending to her plants. We sing, we dance, we paint and craft, we read, we bake, I talk to her about all sorts of subjects.
Taliah can take a break from activities as often as she needs. She can eat and drink when she needs to. She can rest and recharge by sleeping in the afternoon. We meet friends, we go for walks, we have picnics, we have days out. There is counting and colours and so much more.
Her complex needs require no statement in our home.
Appointments can be made at quieter times. We can travel to London for private therapy as often as we like, no permission needed. We can arrange for visits for fun and therapy in our home when it suits us.
Home education is a commitment, but for me it is no more consuming than caring for my child full-time anyway. I have to prioritise her learning over the housework but that is a small price to pay for her happiness and well-being. For Taliah to continue to progress, develop and learn, she needs to be at home.
