This year, we had the option of doing summer school (or extended school year) with Eve to keep her in the routine of school and therapies.
We did it last summer for 6 weeks and there were many benefits to it.
She kept up with a familiar routine, she was getting more skills with therapies and overall, she had a great experience with it.
Our other children didn't mind it, but missed her during the hours she was gone.
I longed for unhurried summer days, time with all children together and the therapies we would do, would be at our discretion.
Eve is still developing and learning new skills so I didn't want to completely stop all therapies.
It's such a hard balance to strike as a parent, we want our children to experience many typical kid experiences yet we want to give them all the opportunities to learn as well. We arrived at a great compromise.
We would go in for a few therapy sessions over the summer but for the most part we would be home, together as a family. It seemed like the right solution and the best decision for Eve at this time.
So far it's worked out great for us. Next year, we may decide to do summer school again. Or we may decide on something completely different.
We will have an entire year to decide and we will see how much progress she makes.
